My name is Richard and I live in South Queensferry with my wife. My son David is now married and left the family home a few years ago. I worked for the Bank of Scotland for around 25 years, unfortunately I was made redundant from that role. I then had a brief spell working as a carer in Fife and then moved on to assisting disabled passengers at Edinburgh Airport. However I now work for the NHS as head porter.
I have been a befriender for QCCC for around 5 years. I decided I wanted to become a befriender as I realised that one day I might need the support of a “friend” in later years as you never know what’s around the corner as life can be so unpredictable at times.
What I enjoy most about my role as a befriender is just being a mate to my befriendee, I love listening to all the old tales of good and bad times from the past, sometimes it may be as simple as going for a walk with them or just a wee cup of tea and a chat, looking at photos new and old can be very rewarding for my befriendee and for me, and of course talking about the rivalry between the two footie teams in Edinburgh!
